What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module has found software that conflicts with the rest of the car's configuration. It then cannot communicate with the other units on the CAN network. The code can also be set when the configuration ID does not match the signal configuration that the CEM sends.

    Possible causes

    • Faulty software in the engine control module
    • Defective or damaged control module
    • Incorrect CAN configuration ID, because the engine control module is not intended for this car
    • Break in the CAN wiring between the engine control module and the CEM

    What you can do

    1. 1Read out the CEM fault codes first. If there are CAN fault codes there, fix them first
    2. 2Check that the battery is connected and that the fuses are intact
    3. 3Check the connectors at the engine control module and the CEM for contact resistance and corrosion
    4. 4Look for breaks in the CAN wiring. Twist the wiring harness while searching
    5. 5If no other fault is found, have a workshop check whether new software needs to be downloaded
    6. 6Erase the fault code once the faults are fixed, then road test the car

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • General orange warning lamp lit
    • Cruise control is inoperative
    • The engine judders under acceleration
    • The engine judders heavily after engine braking
    • Uneven idle

    What the fault can affect3

    • CAN communication is absent
    • The cruise control is switched off
    • The throttle closes when the brakes are applied

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
