ECM-E010
VOLVO
ECM-E010 - Configuration problem. Software error
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
3 modelsC30 (2007–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module checks its own ID against the setup the CEM broadcasts on CAN. The fault code is set when the IDs do not match, or when communication with the CEM is interrupted. The module then responds only to diagnostic commands and cannot communicate normally on CAN.
Possible causes
- Incorrect CAN configuration ID, because the engine control module is not intended for the car, for example a used unit with other software or hardware
- Break in the CAN wiring between the engine control module and the CEM
What you can do
- 1If the engine control module has been replaced, check that it is intended for this car. Loading or programming software is workshop work
- 2Read out the fault codes in the CEM first, since fault-tracing starts there
- 3Check that the battery is connected and that the fuses are intact
- 4Look for breaks and chafing on the CAN wires between the engine control module and the CEM
- 5Erase the fault code once the faults are fixed, then road test the car to see whether it returns
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the configuration and download new software if needed
Symptoms you may notice5
- General warning lamp lit
- A message appears in the display
- Cruise control is inoperative
- Automatic engine start/stop does not work, both while driving and at idle
- Autostart does not work
