What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module monitors the exhaust camshaft position and has found that it does not reach the commanded position fast enough. The code is a mechanical fault where the commanded position cannot be reached, and camshaft control is switched off. The fault can only be set when the engine is running and camshaft control is active.
Possible causes
- Low engine oil pressure
- Poor quality engine oil
- Sticking exhaust camshaft control valve
- Mechanical fault in the VVT unit
What you can do
- 1Check the fuse for the supply voltage to the exhaust camshaft control valve
- 2Check the engine oil level on the dipstick and that the oil is clean and of the right quality
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: activate exhaust camshaft control and see whether it responds
- 4If the oil is in order but the fault remains: have a workshop clean the control valve, or replace it if that does not help
- 5If the fault returns after this: have a workshop check the VVT unit
Symptoms you may notice4
- Check engine lamp lit or behaving abnormally
- Engine is hard to start and cranks slowly
- The car lacks power
- Engine hesitates or runs jerkily on acceleration and at steady speed
What the fault can affect1
- Camshaft control is switched off
