What does this fault code mean?
The code name says the exhaust camshaft is too far retarded, but it is really set when control is too slow while the camshaft is being advanced. The engine control module compares the camshaft position with the commanded position, bank 1. The code is set when the engine is warm, the engine speed is above a certain level and camshaft control is active.
Possible causes
- Poor quality engine oil
- Low oil pressure
- Damaged exhaust camshaft control valve
- Damaged VVT unit
What you can do
- 1If there is a stored code for the crankshaft-to-camshaft correlation, diagnose that one first
- 2Check that the engine oil level is correct and that the oil is clean and of the right quality
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: activate exhaust camshaft control and see whether it responds
- 4Have a workshop remove the control valve for cleaning and check the oil passages in the cylinder head
- 5If the fault remains: have a workshop fit a new control valve
- 6If the fault returns: have a workshop check whether the VVT unit is damaged internally
Symptoms you may notice4
- The car lacks power, especially when pulling away from standstill
- Engine hesitates or runs jerkily on acceleration, when braking and at steady speed
- Uneven idle
- Check engine lamp lit or behaving abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- The camshaft is returned to its basic position
