What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module compares the camshaft position with the crankshaft position using signals from the camshaft sensor and the crankshaft sensor, and adjusts the adaptation if they do not agree. The code concerns bank 1, sensor A, and is set when the adaptation value changes by more than a certain amount.
Possible causes
- Incorrectly set camshafts
- Faulty camshaft control valve
- Damaged VVT unit
- Damaged or worn timing chain
- Faulty camshaft sensor or crankshaft sensor
- Poor quality engine oil
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: read the camshaft adaptation and timing angle in live data with the engine running, and compare with the target value
- 3Check the connectors at the camshaft sensor and the crankshaft sensor for loose or oxidised parts
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire from the camshaft sensor has no open circuit
- 5Check that the engine oil level is correct and that the oil is clean and of the right quality
- 6If the fault returns: have a workshop check the camshaft basic setting, the control valve and the VVT unit
