What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module compares the speed from the crankshaft sensor with the speed from the camshaft sensor. If the calculated crankshaft sensor speed is lower than the camshaft sensor speed, it is treated as a fault and the code is set as a comparison failure. The code can also be set when the intake camshaft adaptation is too high, which means the camshaft is ahead of the crankshaft.
Possible causes
- Open circuit or short in the signal wire
- Poor contact or oxidation in the connections
- Faulty crankshaft sensor
- Faulty camshaft sensor
- Incorrectly set camshafts
- Timing belt has skipped teeth
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the connectors at the crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor are secure and not oxidised
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the crankshaft sensor have no open circuit and no contact with ground or supply voltage
- 4Check the engine oil level and quality, especially if it may be contaminated
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read the speeds from the crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor in live data with the engine idling, and check whether they agree
- 6If the fault returns: have a workshop check the timing belt, the camshaft setting and the control valve
Symptoms you may notice5
- Engine does not start, the starter turns but the engine does not fire
- Engine stalls
- Engine is hard to start and cranks slowly
- The car lacks power
- Check engine lamp lit or behaving abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- Camshaft control is switched off
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
