What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module checks the camshaft positions relative to the crankshaft. The code concerns the exhaust camshaft, bank 1, sensor B, when it sits too far ahead of the crankshaft and the adaptation rises above a certain value. It is checked with the engine warm and idling, and it is an algorithm fault in comparing the signals.
Possible causes
- Poor quality engine oil
- Incorrectly set camshafts
- Camshaft timing belt has skipped teeth
- Sticking camshaft control valve
- Mechanical fault in the VVT unit
- Damaged camshaft control valve
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check the engine oil level and quality, especially if the car mostly makes short trips, as fuel can then mix with the oil
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: read the exhaust camshaft adaptation in live data with the engine warm and idling, and compare with the target value
- 4Have a workshop check the camshaft basic setting and the timing belt
- 5Have a workshop clean the camshaft control valve and check the oil passages in the cylinder head
- 6If the fault returns: have a workshop try a new control valve and check the VVT unit
Symptoms you may notice5
- Check engine lamp lit or behaving abnormally
- The car lacks power
- Engine is hard to start and cranks slowly
- Engine hesitates or runs jerkily
- Emissions warning lamp lit
What the fault can affect1
- Camshaft control is switched off
