What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module adjusts the camshaft adaptation when a camshaft sits too far ahead of the crankshaft, and the code is set when the adaptation value rises above a certain value. The code is labelled bank 1, sensor B, but the condition concerns the intake camshaft, so both camshafts may need checking.
Possible causes
- Poor quality engine oil
- Incorrectly set camshafts
- Camshaft timing belt has skipped teeth
- Damaged camshaft control valve
- Mechanical fault in the VVT unit
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check the engine oil level and quality, and that it is free from contamination
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: activate camshaft control and see whether the valves respond
- 4Have a workshop check the camshaft basic setting and that the timing belt sits correctly
- 5Have a workshop clean the camshaft control valves, or fit new ones if the fault remains
- 6If the fault returns: have a workshop check the VVT unit
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine lamp lit or behaving abnormally
