What does this fault code mean?

The code concerns the control solenoid for the exhaust valve on bank 1. The engine control module monitors the exhaust camshaft position and sets the code when the solenoid signal changes too slowly. The code is set when the camshaft position does not match the commanded position, and

    Possible causes

    • Low engine oil pressure
    • Poor quality engine oil
    • Sticking exhaust camshaft control valve
    • Mechanical fault in the VVT unit

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
    2. 2Check the fuse for the supply voltage to the exhaust camshaft control valve
    3. 3Have a workshop measure the oil pressure and check the engine oil quality
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool: activate exhaust camshaft control and see whether it responds
    5. 5If the fault returns: have a workshop clean the control valve and check the oil passages in the cylinder head, or replace it if that does not help

    Symptoms you may notice4

    • Check engine lamp lit or behaving abnormally
    • Engine is hard to start and cranks slowly
    • The car lacks power
    • Engine hesitates or runs jerkily on acceleration and at steady speed

    What the fault can affect1

    • Camshaft control is switched off

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
