What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module receives information from the front lambda sensor on bank 1 about the air-fuel mixture and controls the sensor heating. It is a general fault with no more specific description. It is set when the heater signal is incorrect, and it is checked with the ignition on. The code is also set if the signal is too low while the heating is switched off.
Possible causes
- Heater wire shorted to supply voltage
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Open circuit in the ground wire
- Poor contact or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in the supply from the system relay
- Faulty front lambda sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check the connector at the front lambda sensor for loose or oxidised parts, and do not use rust-release spray or grease in the connector
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the lambda sensor have no open circuit and no short to ground or supply voltage
- 4Have a workshop check the supply voltage from the system relay to the lambda sensor
- 5If the fault returns: have a workshop try a new lambda sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Emissions warning lamp lit
What the fault can affect1
- Lambda control is switched off
