What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module checks the heater circuit of the front lambda sensor on bank 1 and sets the code when the circuit is shorted to ground or has an open circuit. The code can also be set if the resistance of the sensor heating element is wrong. The lambda sensor provides information about the air-fuel mixture before the particulate filter.

    Possible causes

    • Blown fuse
    • Open circuit in the supply wire
    • Supply wire shorted to ground
    • Poor contact or oxidation in the connections
    • Faulty front lambda sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
    2. 2Check the fuse for the lambda sensor heater
    3. 3Check the connector at the front lambda sensor for loose or oxidised parts, and do not use rust-release spray or grease in the connector
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check that the supply wire to the sensor has no open circuit and no short to ground
    5. 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fault status once the diagnosis is complete, where Fault found means the fault is still present
    6. 6If the fault remains after troubleshooting: have a workshop try a new lambda sensor

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • Emissions warning lamp lit
    • Check engine lamp lit or behaving abnormally

    What the fault can affect2

    • Lambda control is switched off
    • Heating of the front lambda sensor is switched off

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
