What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module monitors the heater element of the rear oxygen sensor (bank 1, sensor 3) and its ability to warm the sensor up. It measures impedance in the heater circuit during warm-up, and the code is set when the heater circuit has an open circuit. Vehicles with two oxygen sensors cannot get this code.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals
- Damaged rear heated oxygen sensor
- Open circuit in the wiring to the sensor
- Blown fuse
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. Their locations are given in the instruction manual or on the fuse chart
- 2With a diagnostic tool, read the fault status once the diagnostic is complete. A status of 'Fault found' means the fault is present now
- 3Check the connector at bank 1 sensor 3, the rear oxygen sensor, for contact resistance and oxidation. Do not use rust solvent spray or grease on the connector
- 4With a multimeter, check that the wiring to the sensor has no open circuit and no short to ground
- 5If the fault remains after checking the connector and wiring, the rear heated oxygen sensor may need replacing
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lights up
- Warning lamp for faults (Check engine) lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- Control of the rear heated oxygen sensor is switched off
