What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module checks the preheating circuit of the rear heated oxygen sensor (bank 1, sensor 3). The code is set when the circuit is short-circuited to ground or when the resistance of the heater element is wrong. The fault can only be detected once the test has started and the conditions are met. Vehicles with two oxygen sensors cannot get this code.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the terminals
- Power lead to the sensor short-circuited to ground
- Open circuit in the power lead to the sensor
- Damaged rear heated oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Make sure the fuses are intact. If you cannot find their positions, they are in the instruction manual
- 2With a diagnostic tool, read the fault status once the diagnostic is complete. A status of Fault found means the fault is present now
- 3Look at the sensor connector for oxidation and loose contacts. Spray or grease does not belong in the connector
- 4With a multimeter, check that the preheating lead is not short-circuited to ground and has no open circuit
- 5If the fault stays after checking the connector and wiring, replace the oxygen sensor. Then read the fault status again
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator (MIL) lamp lights up
- Warning lamps and warning chimes may behave abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- The rear heated oxygen sensor does not preheat
- Control of the rear heated oxygen sensor is switched off
