What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module measures the outside air temperature with a sensor in the left outer mirror and checks the sensor circuit. The code is set when the circuit is short-circuited to ground or supply voltage, or has an open circuit. The wrong value must last for a set period and across two or more consecutive drive cycles.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the CAN network, meaning communication between control modules
- Open circuit in the signal or ground lead
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connectors
- The signal lead is short-circuited to supply voltage
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code with a diagnostic tool with the ignition on and note whether it is active
- 2Look at the connector to the sensor in the left outer mirror for loose connections, oxidation and damage
- 3Look for chafing and pinch damage on the sensor lead in the mirror
- 4With a multimeter, check that the signal lead is not short-circuited to ground or supply voltage and has no open circuit
- 5If there are faults in other control modules too, the CAN network may be the cause, and a workshop is best placed to check it
Symptoms you may notice4
- Air conditioning does not work
- Temperature control of the heating does not work
- The outside temperature gauge shows the wrong value or does not work
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up
What the fault can affect2
- The intake air temperature sensor value is used instead, if that sensor works
- Otherwise a constant value is used
