What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) adjusts the exhaust camshaft position with a changeover valve on bank 1, the cylinder row nearest the front of the engine. The fault code is set when the control signal to the valve is missing. This can be an open circuit in the signal or supply wire, or a damaged valve.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the signal wire to the changeover valve
- Open circuit in the voltage supply wire to the changeover valve
- Damaged exhaust camshaft changeover valve
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault code and note whether the fault status is ”Fault found”, meaning the fault is present right now
- 2Check the fuse for the valve circuit. If it is blown, use a multimeter to check that the wire is not shorted to ground
- 3Check the connector at the changeover valve for loose connections, corrosion and contact resistance
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal and supply wires to the valve have no open circuit
- 5Have a workshop measure the valve resistance if the connector and wiring are in order
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the control module

- The engine can stall while driving, at any time
