What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) requests a fuel pressure and controls the fuel pump through the fuel pump control module. The fault code is set when the measured pressure from the fuel pressure sensor stays too low compared with the requested pressure for a certain time, while the engine runs. The causes can be leaks, clogged filters or a fault in the pump.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, oxidation or open circuit in the connections to the fuel pump or the sensor
- Fuel pump supply wire shorted to ground
- Leak in the fuel lines or the fuel rail
- Clogged fuel filter or clogged fuel lines
- Damaged fuel pump or fuel pump control module
- Damaged fuel pressure sensor
What you can do
- 1Make sure there is enough fuel in the tank
- 2Check the fuel lines between the pump and the fuel rail for leaks
- 3Check the fuel lines and the fuel filter for blockage
- 4Check the connectors at the fuel pump and the fuel pressure sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fuel pressure and the fuel pump duty cycle in live data at idle, and see whether the pressure stays steady
- 6Have a workshop measure the fuel pressure with a gauge and check the pump and the sensor
Symptoms you may notice5
- Check engine lamp (MIL) lights up
- Poor performance and lack of power, especially when pulling away
- The engine can stall while driving
- The engine may hesitate, surge or run jerkily
- The engine may be hard to start
What the fault can affect1
- The fuel pump is controlled using a calculated fuel pressure instead of the measured one
