What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) controls fuel pressure through the fuel pump control module and requests a target pressure. The fault code is set when the pressure reported by the sensor stays too low against the requested pressure for a certain time, while the engine runs. The causes can be faults in connections or the pump circuit, leaks or air in the fuel lines, or a damaged sensor or pump.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, oxidation or open circuit in the connections
- Fuel pump supply wire shorted to ground
- Open circuit in the voltage supply to the fuel pump
- Leak in the fuel lines
- Air in the fuel lines
- Damaged fuel pressure sensor, fuel pump or fuel pump control module
What you can do
- 1Check the fuse for the fuel pump. If it has blown, use a multimeter to check that the wire is not shorted to ground
- 2Check the connectors at the fuel pump and the fuel pressure sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Look for leaks in the fuel lines
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fuel pressure in live data with the engine running and see whether it stays at a lower level than the requested pressure
- 5Have a workshop measure the fuel pressure with a gauge and check the fuel pressure sensor, the fuel pump and its control module
Symptoms you may notice4
- Check engine lamp (MIL) lights up
- Poor performance and lack of power, especially when pulling away
- The engine can stall while driving
- The engine may hesitate, surge or run jerkily while driving
