What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) compares the fuel pressure on the low-pressure side with the highest allowed pressure while the engine is running. The fault code is set when the pressure is too far above the target value for a certain time. The causes can be air in the fuel system, leaks in the fuel lines, or a fault in the sensor, pump or pump control module.

    Possible causes

    • Clogged high-pressure pump
    • Clogged check valve in the inlet pipe
    • Air in the fuel system
    • Leak in the fuel lines
    • Damaged fuel pressure sensor
    • Damaged fuel pump or fuel pump control module

    What you can do

    1. 1Check the fuel lines for leaks
    2. 2Check the connectors at the fuel pressure sensor and the fuel pump for oxidation and loose contacts
    3. 3If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fuel pressure in live data with the engine running and see whether it is higher than the control module requests
    4. 4Have a workshop check the fuel pressure sensor with a gauge, and the fuel pump and its control module
    5. 5Have a workshop check the check valve in the inlet pipe and the high-pressure pump if the fault remains

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • The engine does not start, it only cranks
    • The engine can stall at idle or while driving
    • Uneven idle
    • Poor performance and lack of power, especially when pulling away from a standstill
    • Check engine lamp (MIL) lights up

    What the fault can affect1

    • The fuel pump is controlled using a calculated value instead of the measured one

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
