What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) constantly checks that the mass air flow (MAF) sensor signal is plausible by comparing it with a calculated air mass value. The code is stored when the sensor reads too little airflow compared with the calculated value, while the engine is running. Common causes are a leak in the hose between the turbocharger and the sensor, a clogged air filter or a damaged sensor. An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve stuck open can produce the same reading.
Possible causes
- Leak in the hose or connection between the turbocharger and the mass air flow sensor
- Contact resistance or corrosion in the connections
- Clogged air filter
- Faulty intake air temperature sensor
- Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve stuck in the open position
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Make sure the air filter is not blocked
- 3Look for cracks, loose hose clamps and disconnected joints between the turbocharger and the mass air flow sensor, and listen for leak noise with the engine running
- 4Check that the connector on the mass air flow sensor is fully engaged and free from corrosion and moisture
- 5If you have diagnostic equipment, watch the air mass flow in live data at idle and during throttle input; the value should rise and fall in step with the throttle
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the EGR valve and the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice3
- Engine warning lamp (check engine) lit or behaving abnormally
- Text message in the display
- The car runs poorly and lacks power
What the fault can affect2
- The control module substitutes a computed air mass figure for the sensor reading
- EGR is not controlled as it should be
