What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) constantly compares the mass air flow (MAF) sensor signal with a calculated air mass value. The code is stored when the sensor reads too much airflow compared with the calculated value, while the engine is running. Common causes are leaks in the hoses and connections between the turbocharger and the intake pipe, or an air leak between the turbocharger and the boost pressure sensor. The fault can also lie in a damaged mass air flow sensor.

    Possible causes

    • Leak in the hose or connection between the turbocharger and the intake pipe
    • Air leak in the intake system between the turbocharger and the boost pressure sensor
    • Contact resistance or corrosion on the signal wire
    • Damaged mass air flow sensor
    • Together with ECM-P029900 the code points to a leak in the hose or connection between the turbocharger and the throttle body

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
    2. 2Look for cracks, loose clamps and disconnected joints in the hoses between the turbocharger and the intake pipe
    3. 3Check that the connector on the mass air flow sensor is fully engaged and free from corrosion
    4. 4With a multimeter, check that the signal wire to the mass air flow sensor is not shorted to ground or to supply voltage
    5. 5If you have diagnostic equipment, compare the air mass flow in live data with the throttle input and check that the value follows the throttle smoothly
    6. 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the mass air flow sensor and the intake system

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • Engine warning lamp (check engine) lit or behaving abnormally
    • Text message in the display
    • The car runs poorly and lacks power

    What the fault can affect2

    • The control module substitutes a computed air mass figure for the sensor reading
    • EGR is not controlled as it should be

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
