What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) compares the fuel rail pressure, measured by the fuel pressure sensor on the high-pressure side, with the pressure it requests. The code is stored when the actual pressure is too low compared with the requested pressure for a set period. The fault can be noticed when the engine is cranked, because fuel does not reach the correct pressure.

    Possible causes

    • High-pressure fuel pump is damaged
    • Fuel pressure sensor is damaged

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
    2. 2Check that the connector at the fuel pressure sensor on the fuel rail is fully engaged and free from corrosion
    3. 3Look for loose or chafed wiring near the sensor and along the wire to the engine control module
    4. 4If you have diagnostic equipment, compare the fuel pressure in live data with the requested pressure during cranking and at throttle input
    5. 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel pressure sensor

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • Engine warning lamp (check engine) lit or behaving abnormally
    • The engine lacks power and runs poorly
    • The engine hesitates or surges, especially during acceleration

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
