What does this fault code mean?
The ECM keeps an eye on the temperature reading from the sensor built into the mass air flow unit. The code is stored when that signal is wrong, and As a result the control module works out a calculated value instead of using the measured temperature.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or corrosion in the connector terminals
- Loose or faulty contact in the connection
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Make sure the relevant fuses are intact
- 3Check that the connector on the mass air flow sensor is fully engaged and that its latch has clicked home
- 4Look for damage or chafing in the wiring between the mass air flow sensor and the engine control module
- 5If you have diagnostic equipment, read the sensor's intake temperature in live data at idle and check that it is plausible for the surrounding air
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine warning lamp (check engine) lit or behaving abnormally
- Text message in the display
What the fault can affect1
- The control module uses a calculated value instead of the measured temperature
