What does this fault code mean?
The ECM checks the signal ground to the mass air flow sensor and stores the code when it is incorrect. This fault is an open circuit, meaning a wire has broken or a connection has lost contact. It can be in the connections, the supply or the ground.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, corrosion or a break in the connections
- Break in the voltage supply
- Break in the ground wire
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the connectors at the mass air flow sensor and in the connections are fully seated and free from corrosion
- 3With a multimeter, check that the supply and ground wires to the sensor have continuity
- 4Look for broken or chafed wiring between the sensor and the engine control module
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the connections and the sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Engine warning lamp (check engine) lit or behaving abnormally
