What does this fault code mean?
The ECM uses the mass air flow sensor to measure the air passing through the intake pipe and compares it with a modelled value. The code is stored when the gap between the measured and modelled values stays too large for a set period. If the fault persists the control module relies on a model rather than the sensor reading.
Possible causes
- Air leak in the intake system, for example on hoses or joints downstream of the mass air flow sensor
- Contact resistance or corrosion in the connector terminals
- Break in the signal or supply wire
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Look for leaks in the intake system downstream of the sensor: cracked hoses, loose clamps and disconnected joints
- 3Check that the connectors at the mass air flow sensor are fully engaged and free from corrosion
- 4With a multimeter, check that the signal and supply wires to the sensor have no break and are not shorted to ground or supply voltage
- 5If you have diagnostic equipment, read the air flow in live data at light throttle and during varied driving, and check that the value changes smoothly as the throttle is varied
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice3
- Check engine lamp lit or behaving abnormally
- The engine lacks power and runs poorly
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly during acceleration, deceleration and steady speed
What the fault can affect1
- The control module calculates air mass from a model instead of the measured value
