What does this fault code mean?
The ECM continuously checks that the mass air flow sensor signal is plausible. The code is stored when the signal changes faster than the control module accepts. Dirt, a loose fit or contact problems in the sensor connector can all be behind the fault. The result is that the engine works with a calculated air mass value and its torque may be limited.
Possible causes
- Loose connection or oxidation in the connector
- Clogged air filter
- Contact resistance in the mass air flow sensor connector terminals
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Look for dirt on and around the mass air flow sensor and check the air filter
- 3Check that the connector is fully engaged, free from oxidation, and that the sensor is not loose
- 4With a multimeter, check that the ground wire to the sensor has no break and that the signal wire is not shorted to supply voltage
- 5If you have diagnostic equipment, read the air flow in live data at idle and with the engine cold and then warm, and check that the value changes smoothly
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The car lacks power and runs poorly
What the fault can affect2
- A calculated air mass value is used
- Engine torque may be limited
