What does this fault code mean?
The ECM continuously checks that the mass air flow sensor signal is plausible and follows its characteristic. The code is stored when the signal is wrong, and the fault here is a voltage that is too low. Faults on the swirl flap can also trigger this code, so any swirl flap codes are worked through first. The results are a calculated air mass value and possibly limited engine torque.
Possible causes
- Swirl flap fault, where any swirl flap codes are worked through first
- If this code is set together with ECM-P029900, the cause is probably a leak in the hose or joint between the mass air flow sensor and the turbocharger
- Contact resistance or corrosion in the connections
- Clogged air filter
- EGR valve stuck in the open position
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes stored in the control module; if there are swirl flap codes, work through them first
- 2Check that the air filter is not blocked
- 3Check that the connector at the mass air flow sensor is fully engaged and free from corrosion
- 4Look for leaks: cracked hoses and loose clamps between the mass air flow sensor and the turbocharger
- 5If you have diagnostic equipment, read the intake air temperature in live data and check that the value is reasonable
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the EGR valve and the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The car lacks power and runs poorly
What the fault can affect2
- Engine torque may be limited
- The control module uses a calculated air value in place of the sensor reading
