What does this fault code mean?

The ECM works out the air mass it expects from several parameters and compares that with the value from the mass air flow sensor. The code is stored when the air mass correction factor becomes too high while the lambda adaptation is above or below a set value. While the fault is present, calculated boost and air mass values are used and parts of the emission control are switched off.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance and corrosion in the mass air flow sensor connector terminals
    • Air leak in the intake system
    • Blocked intake system
    • Damaged mass air flow sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
    2. 2Check that the connector at the mass air flow sensor is fully engaged and free from corrosion
    3. 3Look for leaks and cracks in the hoses and joints between the mass air flow sensor and the throttle body
    4. 4Look for blockages in the intake system, for example dirt on the throttle or a clogged air filter
    5. 5If the fault remains after the intake system has been checked, have a workshop check the mass air flow sensor

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • Eco indicator lamp lit

    What the fault can affect3

    • Calculated boost pressure and calculated air mass are used
    • Rear lambda sensor control is switched off
    • Misfire diagnosis is switched off

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
