What does this fault code mean?
The ECM monitors the mass air flow sensor signal and compares it with the normal range. The code is stored when the signal is outside the normal range, and in this case no signal is received at all. The cause may be a broken wire, a short to ground or a faulty sensor.
Possible causes
- Break in the signal wire
- Break in the voltage supply
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Contact resistance in the mass air flow sensor connector terminals
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the connector at the mass air flow sensor is fully engaged and free from corrosion
- 3With a multimeter, check that the voltage supply wire from the system relay to the sensor has no break
- 4With a multimeter, check that the signal wire between the control module and the sensor has continuity and is not shorted to ground
- 5If you have diagnostic equipment, read the air flow in live data at idle and check whether the value changes at all when the throttle is varied
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The car lacks power and runs poorly
What the fault can affect3
- A calculated air mass value is used instead of the measured value
- Rear lambda sensor control and misfire diagnosis are switched off
- Engine torque may be limited
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
