What does this fault code mean?
The ECM works out the expected air mass from several parameters and compares it with the mass air flow sensor reading. The code is stored when the correction factor becomes too low and the lambda adaptation sits above or below a fixed figure. The fault concerns the pulse width signal from the sensor, where the high part of the signal is shorter than allowed, and it is mainly felt as reduced performance.
Possible causes
- High resistance or corrosion at the connector terminals of the air flow sensor
- Air leak in the intake system
- Blocked intake system
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the connector at the mass air flow sensor is fully engaged and free from oxidation
- 3Look for leaks in the hoses and joints of the intake system, especially between the mass air flow sensor and the throttle body
- 4Look for blockages in the intake system, for example deposits at the throttle
- 5If the fault returns once the intake system has been checked, the mass air flow sensor needs a workshop check
Symptoms you may notice1
- The car lacks power and runs poorly
What the fault can affect3
- Calculated boost pressure and calculated air mass are used
- Rear lambda sensor control is switched off
- Misfire diagnosis is switched off
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
