What does this fault code mean?
The ECM estimates the expected air mass from several parameters and checks it against the mass air flow sensor reading. The code is stored when the correction factor becomes too high while the lambda adaptation falls outside a fixed band. The fault concerns the pulse width signal, where the high part of the signal is longer than allowed. Calculated values are used and some monitoring functions are switched off.
Possible causes
- High resistance or corrosion at the connector terminals of the air flow sensor
- Air leak in the intake system
- Blocked intake system
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Make sure the mass air flow sensor connector is free from oxidation and sits firmly
- 3Check the hoses and joints between the mass air flow sensor and the throttle body, and look for leaks and damage
- 4Look for dirt or other blockages in the intake system
- 5If the fault persists, have a workshop check the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The car lacks power and runs poorly
What the fault can affect3
- Calculated boost pressure and calculated air mass are used
- Rear lambda sensor control is switched off
- Misfire diagnosis is switched off
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
