What does this fault code mean?
The ECM monitors the mass air flow sensor signal and stores the code when the signal is outside the normal range. In this case the signal wire is shorted to battery voltage, which makes the signal read too high. The result is that the engine works from a calculated air mass value and some monitoring functions are switched off.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Loose wiring connection
- Break in the signal wire
- Break in the voltage supply
- Contact resistance in the mass air flow sensor connector terminals
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2With a multimeter, check that the signal wire between the control module and the sensor is not shorted to supply voltage
- 3Check that the connectors at the mass air flow sensor sit firmly, have no play and are free from oxidation
- 4Look for chafed wiring near the mass air flow sensor and along the route to the control module
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine warning lamp (check engine) lit or behaving abnormally
- The car lacks power and runs poorly
What the fault can affect3
- A calculated air mass value is used
- Rear lambda sensor control is switched off
- Misfire diagnosis is switched off
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
