What does this fault code mean?
The ECM continuously checks that the mass air flow sensor signal is plausible. The code is stored when the sensor signal is implausible, and the fault is described as an interrupted circuit. The fault is listed as intermittent, so it may come and go and may not be present when the car is checked.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connector terminals
- Break in the voltage supply
- Break in the signal wire
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Make sure the relevant fuses are intact
- 3Check that the connectors at the mass air flow sensor are fully engaged and free from oxidation
- 4With a multimeter, check that the signal wire has continuity and is not shorted to ground or supply voltage
- 5If you have diagnostic equipment, read the fault status after the road test; a fault that is still active is present now
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Engine warning lamp (check engine) lit or behaving abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- A calculated air mass value is used
