What does this fault code mean?
At engine start the ECM stores the intake, fuel and engine temperature sensor values and compares them. The code is stored when the air temperature sensor signal corresponds to a temperature that is too far below the others.
Possible causes
- Damaged air temperature sensor
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the air temperature sensor connections
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2If you have diagnostic equipment, read the intake, fuel, outside and engine temperatures in live data at engine start; the intake value should match the surrounding air
- 3Check that the connectors at the air temperature sensor are free from contact resistance, play and oxidation
- 4If the value is not reasonable, the fault is present; if it is reasonable, the fault may have been temporary
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the air temperature sensor
Symptoms you may notice3
- The eco indicator lamp in the instrument panel lights up
- The engine is hard to start
- The car has reduced performance
What the fault can affect1
- The control module uses the value from the outside air temperature sensor
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
