What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the intake air temperature sensor reading with the engine, fuel and outside temperatures. Once the engine has stood switched off for a long time, the sensor signal has stayed stuck low, which does not match the other temperatures. The sensor is built into the mass air flow sensor, so the fault concerns the same unit that measures airflow.
Possible causes
- Increased contact resistance in the connector to the mass air flow sensor
- Damaged air temperature sensor inside the mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the fault code, clear it, then road test the vehicle to see whether it returns
- 2Check the connector to the mass air flow sensor: it should be firmly seated and free from corrosion and moisture
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: compare air temperature in live data with coolant and fuel temperature. An unreasonable value means the fault is still present
- 4If the connector is in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- The control module sets the intake air temperature equal to the fuel temperature
