What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the signal from the air temperature sensor (bank 1) in the intake manifold. When the engine has been off for a while and the value deviates too much from the engine, fuel or outside temperature, the signal stays constantly high and the fault code is set. The sensor is built into the mass air flow sensor, so it is the same unit that also measures airflow.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connector at the mass air flow sensor
- Damaged air temperature sensor located inside the mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the fault code, clear it, then road test the vehicle to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the connector to the mass air flow sensor is seated properly and not oxidised or damp
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the air temperature in live data with the coolant and fuel temperature. An unreasonable value means the fault is still present
- 4If the connector is fine but the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- The control module sets the intake air temperature equal to the fuel temperature
