What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) keeps checking the reading from the temperature sensor built into the mass air flow sensor. The fault code is set when the signal is too low for a longer period or across several driving cycles in a row. The sensor is integrated in the mass air flow sensor, so it is the same unit that also measures airflow.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Signal cable short-circuited to ground
- Damaged air temperature sensor inside the mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the diagnostic status and fault status for the code with the ignition on. Check that the fault is not active when the test is finished
- 2Check that the relevant fuses are intact
- 3Check the connector to the mass air flow sensor: it should be firmly seated and free from contact resistance, play and oxidation
- 4With the connector unplugged, use a multimeter to check that the signal cable has no contact with ground (the body)
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the air temperature in live data with the coolant temperature. A value that is too low suggests the fault is still present
- 6If the connector and wire are in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect3
- The control module uses the value from the outdoor temperature sensor
- The control module uses a calculated value for the air temperature
- The inlet air temperature value is set equal to the fuel temperature value
