What does this fault code mean?

The control module keeps an eye on the temperature reading inside the mass air flow sensor. The fault code is set when the signal is too high and this continues for a longer period or across several driving cycles in a row. The sensor is integrated in the mass air flow sensor, so it is the same unit that also measures airflow.

    Possible causes

    • Signal cable short-circuited to supply voltage
    • Contact resistance or oxidation at the sensor terminals
    • Contact resistance or corrosion on the signal wire
    • Damaged air temperature sensor inside the mass air flow sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the diagnostic status and fault status for the code with the ignition on. Check that the fault is not active when the test is finished
    2. 2Check that the relevant fuses are intact
    3. 3Look at the connector at the mass air flow sensor. It should be firmly seated and free from oxidation
    4. 4With the connector unplugged, use a multimeter to check that the signal cable is not short-circuited to positive
    5. 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read the air temperature in live data with the engine running and see whether it is too high compared with the other temperatures
    6. 6If the wiring and connector are in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the mass air flow sensor

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally

    What the fault can affect3

    • The outside temperature from the sensor is used instead
    • The control module uses a calculated value for the air temperature
    • The inlet air temperature is set equal to the fuel temperature

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
