What does this fault code mean?
The control module reads engine temperature through a coolant temperature sensor and checks the voltage from that sensor. The fault code is set when the sensor value is incorrect for a longer period or across several driving cycles in a row.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the signal or ground cable
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connector
- Signal cable short-circuited to supply voltage
- Damaged coolant temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code status with the ignition on. Clear the code and road test the vehicle to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the fuses are intact
- 3Check the connector at the coolant temperature sensor. It should be firmly seated and free from contact resistance and oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the coolant temperature in live data and see whether it rises as the engine warms up, rather than staying still
- 5With the connector unplugged, use a multimeter to check that the signal cable is not open-circuited and has no contact with positive or ground
- 6If the connector and wiring are in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the coolant temperature sensor
Symptoms you may notice5
- The emissions warning lamp is lit
- The engine is difficult to start
- The engine idles unevenly
- The engine stalls
- The electric cooling fan runs all the time, even when the ignition is off
