What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) checks the function of the coolant temperature sensor by following how the temperature rises during warm-up after a cold start. The fault code is set when the signal from the sensor is judged to be incorrect.
Possible causes
- Loose connection, contact resistance or oxidation in the connector
- Damaged cable harness
- Damaged coolant temperature sensor
- Faulty engine coolant thermostat
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code status with the ignition on. Clear the code and road test the vehicle from a cold start to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the fuses are intact
- 3Check the connector at the coolant temperature sensor for loose connections, contact resistance and oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the coolant temperature in live data during warm-up and check that it rises steadily
- 5If the temperature rises too slowly or not at all, or if the connector and wiring are damaged, have a workshop check the thermostat and the sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- Automatic engine start/stop does not work while driving
- Automatic engine start/stop does not work at idle
What the fault can affect1
- During warm-up a calculated coolant temperature that rises steadily is used
