What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) checks the signal from the engine temperature sensor. If the signal stays above a certain limit without falling within a set time, the control module treats it as a fault and the code is set. It then compares the signal with an engine temperature it calculates from speed and load, among other things.
Possible causes
- Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Insufficient coolant in the cooling system
- Damaged thermostat
- Clogged radiator
What you can do
- 1With the engine running, read the engine temperature sensor signal in live data and see whether the value is reasonable. An unreasonable value means the fault is still present
- 2Check that the fuses are intact
- 3Check the connector at the engine temperature sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Check the coolant level in the cooling system. A low level can affect the sensor signal
- 5Take care working in the engine bay, as the electric cooling fan can run even when the ignition is off
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the thermostat, the radiator and the sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine is difficult to start and cranks slowly on starting
What the fault can affect1
- The engine coolant temperature is calculated using a model
