What does this fault code mean?
At engine start the engine control module (ECM) saves the values from the intake, fuel and engine temperature sensors and compares them. If the engine temperature sensor signal is too low compared with the others, the fault code is set.
Possible causes
- Damaged coolant temperature sensor
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connector
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code status with the ignition on and check whether the fault is active. Clear the code and road test the vehicle
- 2Check the connector at the coolant temperature sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Check the coolant level and antifreeze protection. A frozen sensor can produce this code. Take care, as the cooling fan can run with the ignition off
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: compare coolant temperature in live data with intake and fuel temperatures. A value that is too low suggests the fault is still present
- 5If the connector is in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the coolant temperature sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- The emissions warning lamp is lit
- The engine is difficult to start
What the fault can affect1
- The engine coolant temperature is calculated using a model
