What does this fault code mean?

At engine start the engine control module (ECM) saves the values from the intake, fuel and engine temperature sensors and compares them. If the engine temperature sensor signal is too high compared with the others, the fault code is set.

    Possible causes

    • Damaged coolant temperature sensor
    • Contact resistance or oxidation in the connector

    What you can do

    1. 1If you have a diagnostic tool: read the engine temperature in live data at start-up and check that it is reasonable. An unreasonable value means the fault is still present
    2. 2Check the connector at the engine temperature sensor for loose connections, oxidation and contact resistance
    3. 3Check the coolant level and that the coolant has the correct antifreeze protection. Take care, as the electric cooling fan can run even when the ignition is off
    4. 4Read the fault code status with the ignition on and check whether the fault is active. Clear the code and road test the vehicle to see whether it returns
    5. 5If the connector is in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the sensor

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • The emissions warning lamp is lit
    • The engine is difficult to start

    What the fault can affect1

    • The engine coolant temperature is calculated using a model
