What does this fault code mean?
After start-up the engine control module (ECM) works out a theoretical coolant temperature from time since start, engine speed and load. If the sensor signal sits below that figure, the fault code is set.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connectors
- Damaged temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code status with the ignition on and check whether the fault is active. Clear the code and road test the vehicle
- 2Check the connector at the engine temperature sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Read the coolant temperature sensor signal in live data and check that the temperature is reasonable and follows the engine warming up
- 4Check the coolant level and antifreeze protection. A frozen sensor can produce this code. Take care, as the cooling fan can run with the ignition off
- 5If the connector is in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- The emissions warning lamp is lit
- The engine is difficult to start
