Show models by year and engine (1)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) checks the signal from the engine temperature sensor and compares it with an engine temperature it calculates from speed and load, among other things. The fault code is set when the signal shows a temperature that is too high and does not fall within a set time.
Possible causes
- Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Insufficient coolant in the cooling system
- Damaged thermostat
- Clogged radiator
What you can do
- 1Start the engine and read the engine temperature sensor signal in live data. An unreasonable value means a permanent fault
- 2Check that the fuses are intact
- 3Check the connector at the engine temperature sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Check the coolant level and antifreeze protection. Take care, as the cooling fan can run with the ignition off
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the thermostat, the radiator and the sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- The emissions warning lamp is lit
- The engine is difficult to start and cranks slowly when cold
What the fault can affect1
- The engine temperature is calculated using a model
