What does this fault code mean?
The control module watches engine temperature with the coolant temperature sensor and compares it with the air temperature in the mass air flow sensor, the boost pressure sensor temperature, the outside temperature and the fuel temperature. If the coolant reading deviates too much from these values, the fault code is set.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connector
- Damaged coolant temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the diagnostic status and fault status for the code with the ignition on. Check whether the fault is active, then clear the code
- 2Check the connector at the coolant temperature sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: read the coolant temperature in live data and check that it is reasonable. An unreasonable value means the fault is permanent
- 4Check the coolant level and the antifreeze protection. Take care, as the electric cooling fan can run even when the ignition is off
- 5If the connector is in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the sensor
Symptoms you may notice5
- The Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
- The engine is difficult to start
- The engine idles unevenly
- The engine stalls
- The electric cooling fan runs all the time
What the fault can affect3
- The control module uses the intake air temperature at start-up if it has no fault of its own
- The engine temperature is calculated using a model after start-up
- The electric cooling fan runs at a fixed, predefined speed
