What does this fault code mean?
After a long period switched off, the engine control module (ECM) compares the coolant temperature sensor value with the air, fuel and outside temperatures. If the sensor signal is too high in relation to these, the fault code is set.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connector
- Damaged engine temperature sensor
- Damaged coolant temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the engine temperature sensor signal in live data with the engine running. An unreasonable value means a permanent fault, while a reasonable value means it is not active right now
- 2Check the connector at the engine temperature sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Check that the fuses are intact. If an engine heater has been fitted afterwards, the fault code may be set incorrectly
- 4Take care working in the engine bay, as the electric cooling fan can run even when the ignition is off
- 5If the connector is in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the sensor
Symptoms you may notice5
- The Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
- The engine is difficult to start and cranks slowly on starting
- The engine idles unevenly
- The engine stalls while driving
- The electric cooling fan runs all the time
What the fault can affect3
- At start-up the intake air temperature is used if the intake sensor has no fault
- After start-up the engine temperature is calculated using a model
- The electric cooling fan runs at a predefined speed
