What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) compares the oil temperature sensor value with the coolant temperature sensor value. If the temperature differs too much between the two sensors, the fault code is set.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance in the connector
    • Damaged coolant temperature sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1If you have a diagnostic tool: read the coolant and oil temperatures in live data with the ignition on. If they differ greatly, the fault is still present
    2. 2Check the connector at the coolant temperature sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
    3. 3With the connector unplugged, use a multimeter to check that the signal cable is not short-circuited to ground
    4. 4Read the fault code status with the ignition on and then clear the code. Road test the vehicle to see whether it returns
    5. 5If the connector is in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the coolant temperature sensor

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • A message is shown in the information display
    • The electric cooling fan runs all the time, even when the ignition is off

    What the fault can affect1

    • The control module uses a temperature model for the coolant

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
