What does this fault code mean?

After engine start the control module works out a theoretical coolant temperature from the time since start, engine speed and load. If the sensor signal is static and does not match that value, the fault code is set. It is often set together with another fault code for the coolant temperature sensor.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance and oxidation in the connector
    • Damaged coolant temperature sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Read all fault codes for the coolant temperature sensor, since this code is often set together with another
    2. 2Read the fault code status with the ignition on and then clear the code. Road test the vehicle to see whether it returns
    3. 3Check the connector at the coolant temperature sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the coolant temperature in live data during warm-up. A value that stays still suggests the sensor may be damaged
    5. 5Check the coolant level and the antifreeze protection, since a frozen sensor can produce this code
    6. 6If the connector is in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the sensor

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The engine is difficult to start and cranks slowly on starting

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
