What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) checks the function of the coolant temperature sensor during warm-up after a cold start. If the value from the sensor has changed too little compared with the start temperature, the fault code is set.

    Possible causes

    • Loose connection or oxidation in the connector
    • Open circuit on the control signal lead
    • Damaged battery relay
    • Damaged coolant temperature sensor
    • Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the fault code status with the ignition on and check whether the fault is active. Then clear the code and road test the vehicle from a cold start
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact
    3. 3Check the connector at the engine temperature sensor for looseness, contact resistance and oxidation
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the engine temperature sensor signal in live data. An unreasonable value means a permanent fault, while a reasonable one means it is not active now
    5. 5If the connector is in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check the sensor, the battery relay and the wiring

    Symptoms you may notice4

    • Automatic engine start/stop does not work while driving
    • Automatic engine start/stop does not work at idle
    • The Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
    • The engine is difficult to start and cranks slowly on starting

    What the fault can affect2

    • The automatic engine start/stop function is switched off
    • The control module falls back on a default value or a calculation model

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
