What does this fault code mean?
The control module checks the coolant temperature sensor signal. If the signal corresponds to a temperature higher than a certain value, the fault code is set. The fault is linked to the signal cable, which may be short-circuited to ground or have an open circuit.
Possible causes
- Increased resistance or oxidation in the signal wire connection
- Open circuit in the signal cable
- Damaged coolant temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code status with the ignition on and check whether the fault is active. Then clear the code and road test the vehicle
- 2Check the connector at the coolant temperature sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3With the connector unplugged, use a multimeter to check that the signal cable is not short-circuited to ground (the body) and does not have an open circuit
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the coolant temperature sensor value in live data. A value that is too high compared with the engine warm-up suggests the fault is still present
- 5If the wiring and connector are in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the coolant temperature sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- The Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
- The engine does not start
What the fault can affect2
- The engine temperature is calculated using a model
- The electric cooling fan runs at a predefined speed
